*On a lighter sidenote, if ETA wants peaceful negotiation- why don't they stop looking so scary?
'We are the ETA; will you talk to us about sovereignty while we are wearing these creepy shrouds over our faces?' They should wear 'friendlier' masks- like Will Smith masks or masks of the members of Franz Ferdinand or Barney masks- everyone likes those guys!
The ETA, a Basque nationalist group (who is classified as terrorists by the U.S. and EU) has announced via videotape that the group 'has decided to declare a permanent cease-fire as of March 24, 2006.' In the video, three ETA members (wearing shrouds and berets to mask their identity) sit afront the ETA flag.
PM Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero expressed caution in negotiating with the group, but is hopeful for a peaceful outcome. The conservative Popular Party of Spain has voiced reluctance in sacrificing too much political power in dealing with the group. 'One cannot pay a political price for peace. If we were to do so, terrorism would have won,' said party leader Mariano Rajoy.
In 1998, the group announced an 'indefinite' cease-fire; this lasted until 2000 however, when killing began again. The 2 years of cease-fire in between is believed to be an excuse for rearmament and organization.
The ETA is a leftist separatist group who wants an independent socialist state for the Basque people, idependent of Spain and France. The group was started in 1959 by young radical Basque nationalists. Since then, the ETA has employed tactics of bombings, assasinations, and kidnappings and has killed over 800 people.
