So I took a break from my regular t.v. viewing of BET's barage of gaudy rap videos to watch some serious news stations some day last week, (namely The Daily Show and Colbert Report- as a serious journalists, these are my most dependable sources) when I notice that every news station is covering the issue of gay marriage- while putting the war issue on the back burner. I even saw the president devote a whole speech in the interest of ratifting an amendment that would ban gay marriage.
Recently I learned that all this sudden resurgence of the gay marrigae issue is due to a annual struggle from the right to ban marriage. This year, the house voted down an amendment to ban gay marriage. The vote was lost 11 votes short of the 60(2/3rds support of the House) needed for the debate to proceed. Supporters say they will continue to push for banning same sex marriage, while the opposition say this issue is just a ploy by the president and his administation to rally conservatives and destract the public from the war. Seven Republicans voted against the amendament believing banning gay marriage is up to state affairs while two Democrats voted for it. National polls show that a majority of Americans are against legalizing same-sex marriages but do not beleive an amendment is needed to do so.
The argument is whether homosexuality is part of the human condition or not/ if it is environmental or biological. History is covered with gayness- from ancient Rome to modern San Francisco. Was there really gay cave men? If homosexulaity is genetic, than shouldn't gays have died out? Were the X-Men movies an allegory for the whole gay argument? These questions rack my brain on the issue. Honestly, on the whole gay marriage issue, I am on the fence. On one side, the argument is denying a group of people the right of marriage; while on the other, it is said that marriage is sacred and the whole institution of family will be ruined and the definition of marriage blurred. What's next? Will man and monkry be betrothed? 'You may kiss the ape bride.'
The real question is if anyone really cares about this? I know a few gay people that I'm cool with. They can do whatever they want in their own privacy- just like anyone else. We get along fine. Here's what a conversation with my friend Andrew(openly gay) sounds like after a game of tennis:
Andrew: 'Hey good game! You can really stroke some balls!'
Me: 'Uh..thanks.'
Andrew: 'Hey, I'm gonna go hit the showers. You know Global Warming is a real issue. We should really conserve fossil
fuels- like the ones that we use for hot water, so I was thinking.....'
Me: 'I gotta go.'

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THIS...
I cannot believe Andrew tried to get you in the shower too, JB! I find myself in a constant battle trying to get him to stop doing that.
Yeah, this is becomig a
You guys are lucky
At least you guys aren't roomates with him. I have to lock my doors every time I want to take a simple nap. Johnny forgot to lock his door once, and told me he would never make that mistake again.
